Our Strategic Plan

We are pleased to present the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board’s (Board) Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2011–2016. We expect Department of Energy’s (DOE) defense nuclear facilities to present the Board new challenges as they undergo significant changes, including the potential for a transformation of the nuclear weapons complex and the design and construction of major nuclear waste processing and stabilization facilities. This updated Strategic Plan sets forth a broad vision of how the Board will fulfill its statutory mission to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety at DOE’s defense nuclear facilities in the face of these challenges. The Board recognizes that the safety of defense nuclear facility workers is an important part of its mission.

As we plan to meet these responsibilities, the Board’s strategic safety goals and objectives are aligned to its core functions and organizational structure. The Board continues to emphasize technical expertise, independent judgment, focused nuclear safety reviews, and public hearings. This ensures that the Board provides independent, stable, and predictable safety oversight of defense nuclear facilities. This Strategic Plan also describes our agency’s commitment to management excellence. This plan includes the core values that will guide our work.
